Fons and its surrounding lands, in the Limargue area, provide contrasting landscapes. The stark quality of the Causses is tempered by the greenery of the chestnut forests which recall the Segala area of the Lot. Recently built, the little market hall of Fons is charming, with its fine rafters and massive stone pillars. Nowadays, it's hard to imagine the intense commercial activity that used to go on here. A grain measure is sheltered beneath the hall. The control of items used for measuring goods, which served both for commercial exchanges and for settling the proportion of the harvest due in taxes, is first mentioned in 1255 in the context of a conflict between the Prior and the consuls.
