Because both its architecture and its history make this village a one-off in the landscape of the Lot, Capdenac-le-Haut entered the charmed circle of the Most Beautiful Villages in France in June 2010.
Only 4 kms from Figeac, this village in which every stone exhales a breath of the Middle Ages was once the oppidum (hill fort) which was the scene of Caesar's final battle against the Gauls.
Capdenac ? A keep, ramparts, troglodytic fountains… and that unique feel of a Gallo-Roman fortress which captured Prosper Mérimée's heart. « One of the most beautiful sites in France » said he, even then. All this 110 metres above the river !
The roofs are magnificent ! Three types of material and three colours make up the village roofs. Flat tiles, lauzes (stone slabs) and pantiles.
The Lot's character is formed by its 'causses' (limestone plateaux) through which the Lot, Dordogne and Célé valleys have carved their way. It is studded with major tourist attractions and beautiful villages such as Rocamadour, Cahors, Figeac and Saint Cirq Lapopie…. Man and Nature have both left their imprint on the Pech Merle cave and Padirac Chasm. When you're rambling or cycling, the unspoiled, authentic nature of the Lot is plain to see. Home to excellent local produce and fine food and wines, the Lot has many treats to offer your taste buds, including truffles, foie gras, lamb and melons from Quercy, and Cahors Malbec Wine.
